Nebraska Historical Markers
Nebraska Historical Markers are used to commemorate
significant events, people, places, sites and
traditions in Nebraska. The Nebraska State Historical
Society is responsible for overseeing the historical
marker program in Nebraska. No marker shall be placed
without the consent of the Historical Society.
Most often, markers are proposed by local organizations
or government entities. The topic and text of the
proposed markers must be approved by the Nebraska State
Historical committe.
It is preferred that markers be located on public
property, or property that is owned by a non-profit
organization. It is rare that a historical marker is
approved for placement on individually-owned private
property in Nebraska. Frequently, markers are placed
along a state highway, if not, the sponsoring
organization must submit written approval from the
owner of the property where the marker is to be
placed. Organizations sponsoring a Nebraska historical
marker receive a credit line at the bottom of the
marker.
