Nebraska is the only state in the United States of America to have
a one-house or "Unicameral" Legislature. The Lieutenant
Governor serves as the President of the Legislature, and presides
over daily legislative activity. The Clerk of the Legislature, and
Assistant Clerk are responsible for ensuring that all
constitutional, statutory and policy requirements are followed when
the Legislature conducts its business. There are 49 Senators, each
representing one district in Nebraska, and 14 Standing Committees,
as well as Select and Special Committees that are responsible for
performing the Legislative process. After the legislature passes a
bill, it goes to the Governor for consideration. The Governor has
five (5) days to act on a bill, if the Governor signs a bill or
declines to act on it, the bill becomes state law. The Governor may
also veto a bill, and if so, the Legislature may override the veto,
requiring a vote of at least 30 senators
